Which wrinkle treatment is right for me?

Wrinkles are part of aging, they shape the face of each person individually and are caused by the natural aging of the skin. External influences, such as smoking, stress or too much sun exposure, can have a decisive effect on the formation of wrinkles. If one finds one’s wrinkles unsightly and disturbing, there are now various options for treatment. But just as one can discuss aesthetic preferences, the question of which correct wrinkle treatment is best for oneself seems just as difficult.

The decision as to whether to opt for a Treatment with Botox, hyaluronic acid or a laser facelift decides, requires thorough information and consultation, depending on what wishes one has and which method should be used for your own skin. But what are the criteria for determining which procedure is the most suitable?

Finding the right wrinkle treatment: Botox, hyaluronic acid and co.

In principle, the means for wrinkle treatment differ primarily in their areas of application and in their duration of action. The extent of the treatment as well as the necessary pre- and post-treatment must also be considered – not only the price depends on this, but also the health requirements are important, as surgery is not an option for everyone.

In the following article, each method is briefly explained. Detailed information about each treatment can be found on Dr. Bernard’s website.

– Botox

Botulinum toxin, Botox for short, is a protein substance and a so-called “neurotoxin”which is produced by bacteria and prepared as a drug. It has been used curatively in medicine for decades. Injected into the skin, Botox prevents the transmission of excitation from the nerves to the muscles, reducing or eliminating muscle contraction, depending on the dosage.

By relaxing the muscles, wrinkles are smoothed out. The cause of the wrinkle formation is thus combated without restricting other nerve functions, such as feeling or touch.

Botox is used for so-called expression lines, which are caused by years of stressing the facial muscles, such as laughing or frowning. Especially forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet and the so-called frown lines. can be evened out.

It usually takes several applications to permanently reduce wrinkles. For example, a forehead wrinkle may possibly require 20 or more applications to achieve the desired result. Because of this, treatment with Botulinum toxin can be expensive if you want to achieve lasting results. With a single treatment, the duration of the effect is limited to three to six months – with multiple treatments, the respective duration of effect is extended with each additional treatment.

– Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is found in the body in various types of tissue and provides the “fresh” appearance of the skin, as it binds water to itself, making the skin appear firmer and more voluminous. Due to the natural occurrence in the body, the hyaluronic acid is well tolerated, which means that no skin irritation can occur during treatment.

As with the use of Botox, hyaluronic acid is injected into the skin as a so-called “filler”, but in comparison it is more suitable for the proper wrinkle treatment of so-called Gravity wrinklessuch as drooping corners of the mouth or pronounced nasolabial folds. Since the proportion of naturally occurring hyaluronic acid in the body decreases with age, such wrinkles occur due to the decreasing elasticity and moisture of the skin.

Depending on the type of filler based on hyaluronic acid and the amount of filler used, the duration of effect ranges from three to twelve months. Very deep wrinkles, as with Botox treatment, require several applications and can also be treated in combination with Botox. Once or twice a year, a booster can be useful, which in turn increases the intervals between the respective applications.

– Thread lifting

In contrast to the “fillers” presented so far, thread lifting requires a minimally invasive procedure. On the other hand, this method has the decisive advantage that its effect lasts much longer, usually for three to four years.

The threads are used primarily for contour improvement, such as lifting the cheeks and eyebrows. Through small incisions, a thread with barbs is inserted under the skin into the fatty tissue, causing so-called fibrosis around the thread, which ensures that the connective tissue is scarred and thus becomes firmer. There are different threads, which differ in quality.

One of the newest methods is the Silhouette Soft®, which Dr. Bernard also uses in her practice in Munich. This technique is particularly gentle, painless and safe and is performed without surgery. The threads used are poly-lactic acid or poly-capro-lactone and can be completely broken down by the body.

– Laser facelift

The laser facelift method can be used not only for deep wrinkles, but also for acne scars, age spots and unwanted hair. The results with this method of wrinkle treatment are excellent and convincing as a non-surgical alternative to the traditional facelift. Dr. Bernard’s practice uses this latest technique of laser facelift.

Several applications are usually necessary for a proper wrinkle treatment, in which after an ointment anesthesia or cooling of the skin on the corresponding part of the face with the laser by focused light certain tissue layers are destroyed, which are responsible for the wrinkles. The surrounding area is spared in the process.

The greatest advantage with this variant is that the duration of effect is between eight and ten years.

There are different lasers that are used depending on individual needs. Dr. Bernard works with the erbium YAG Laser Joule®which has been used successfully for years in the field of dermatology and plastic surgery.
