Sport is the best anti-aging

An hour of personal training every day. A dream. The inner pig doesn’t stand a chance… On the first day, I go to the gym. Personal trainer Iris Krummenacher shows me exercises that I can also incorporate into my everyday life.

At the beginning of the lesson, a short theoretical introduction: “Metabolism is responsible for using up energy: Ten percent of it is needed in thermogenesis, that is, for heat production in the body. We need another 20 to 25 percent for physical activities such as sports. 65 to 70 percent of the energy is available for the vital functions of the organs – this is the so-called basal metabolic rate,” says the personal trainer. And this is precisely the key to healthy and sustainable weight loss.

The point is to positively influence this approximately 70 percent, i.e. the basal metabolic rate, to increase the energy requirement step by step. And the best way to do that is with the support of a targeted fitness program. My exercises for every day have such sounding names as “Burpees,” “Squats” or “Plank. For most of them, you don’t need any additional equipment and can train everything wonderfully in your own four walls.

Increase the number of cellular power plants

fitness victoria virginI’m learning: if you want to increase your basal metabolic rate, you should build muscle mass, because muscle uses more energy than fat tissue, even at rest. Strength training in the gym is an effective way to do this. The number of the cell’s own power plants – the mitochondria – should also be increased through targeted endurance training such as running, walking, swimming or cycling. The more mitochondria a cell has, the more energy it can produce, which in turn has a positive effect on the basal metabolic rate and, as an anti-aging measure, also on the entire organism. The number of small cellular power plants can be increased up to one hundred percent per cell. Regular exercise also has a strong stimulating effect on carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. Regular exercise is therefore a very important strategy when it comes to staying young and healthy for longer.

poolSince I enjoy the fitness program incredibly much, I now additionally go to the courses that are offered at the Victoria Jungfrau every day. These include yoga, Pilates or body forming. Since I’m a confirmed water rat, I move the next hour of personal training to the pool. It’s incredible what you can do in the water with just a few tools. I’m totally thrilled and will try to structure my everyday life so that fitness fits into my daily routine at least twice a week in the future. The crowning glory is the wonderful Nescens Better Aging Spa program. More on this tomorrow.
