More volume through fillers – Which are best suited?

Many people discover the first wrinkles, especially expression lines from about the age of thirty. Depending on what one expects from one’s skin and, of course, on one’s personal predisposition, the first wrinkles can appear even before the age of thirty – or much later. Nowadays, we have excellent and safe methods at our disposal to make wrinkles disappear and to keep the skin youthful and smooth for many years: “Filler” in this method is a generic term for different materials which are injected under the skin to provide more volume and moisture to provide as well as maintain a radiant appearance.

Why do we have wrinkles?

If you eat healthy, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and nicotine, and take good care of your skin, you are already creating the best conditions for beautiful and even skin. Regular exposure to fresh air also has a positive effect on the skin and makes it appear fresher. However, it is important to use sunscreen with a high sun protection factor. Even if all the listed points are observed, the formation of wrinkles is a normal phenomenon of the aging process. Cell division functions more slowly over the years, the skin becomes drier, less oily and it loses not only volume, but above all its elasticity. Over time, the first wrinkles form around the mouth and around the eyes, which in the further course can change to deeper and deeper wrinkles.

Filler for wrinkle injections

Patients who want to fight their wrinkles do not necessarily have to go under the knife. Today, modern cosmetic surgery offers the possibility of wrinkle injections. Patients who start with wrinkle injections at an early stage have the best chance to achieve a permanently beautiful and young facial skin. The wrinkles smooth out again, the skin regains its elasticity and the formation of wrinkles is slowed down many times or even stopped completely for the time being.

What materials are used as fillers?

In modern surgery, both biological and synthetically produced fillers are used for wrinkle injections:

Hyaluronic acid is anyway a component of the human skin and therefore very well tolerated. The advantage of hyaluronic acid is that it can be injected under the skin in different consistencies from thin to thick. For light wrinkles, injections of thin liquid hyaluronic acid are sufficient. For deep wrinkles, thick fluid material is used to smooth the skin. Hyaluronic acid is usually well tolerated and is therefore definitely suitable for treatment.

Radiesse® consists of calcium hydroxyapatite microspheres dissolved in a water-based gel carrier. It is a registered trademark of Merz and has been used for more than 20 years. Radiesse® stimulates the body’s own collagen production after the injection and thus ensures long-lasting effects.

Own fat is one of the most popular substances for wrinkle injections. However, wrinkle injections with autologous fat require a previous procedure: During liposuction, the body’s own fatty tissue is prepared for later use as a filler.

has already been on everyone’s lips for a long timeIt is a protein with the exact name botulinum toxin type A. A wrinkle injection with Botox leads to a relaxation of the musculature in the injected areas, whereby a smoothing of lighter wrinkles can be achieved. Dr. Martha Bernard will be happy to advise you in detail and in confidence on this subject.

Materials – what are the chances and risks?

Wrinkle injections with hyaluronic acid, hydroxyapatite or autologous fat carry the least risks for the patient. All the substances mentioned are biodegradable and are usually very well tolerated. Depending on the depth of the wrinkles, results may be visible immediately or may take a few days.

Similarly, how long the effect lasts depends on the current depth of the wrinkles. As a rule, the effects are visible for a period of 12 to 18 months visible before follow-up treatment becomes necessary. With an injection of autologous fat, the effect can last even much longer, as the skin is underpadded with the body’s own material.

Radiesse®, which also uses hydroxyapatite as a base, is also biodegradable and therefore carries few risks. The effects are immediately visible. Follow-up treatment becomes necessary after about one to one and a half years.

Radiesse® as a gel matrix may be noticeable to the patient under the skin immediately after the injection. However, the material spreads over a large area within a few days and provides a lasting smoothing. Wrinkle treatment with Radiesse® may only be performed by specially trained specialists.

Wrinkle injections with Botox are also generally very well tolerated. However, patients should be aware that follow-up treatment is necessary after about four to six months. A visible effect is seen after just a few days.
