Blind from wrinkle injections?

Hyaluronic acid is supposed to smooth wrinkles, make the complexion radiant or optimize lips. But unlike Botox, laypersons are also allowed to perform the injections. With sometimes fatal consequences in the case of wrinkle injections.

According to the medical journal Medical Tribune, patients are rarely told that the compilcations of filler injections can include vision loss. And also Professor Raymund E. Horch, Director of the Plastic and Hand Surgery Clinic at the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, warns of the serious consequences if hyaluronic acid is injected into a blood vessel or nerve by mistake or through lack of knowledge. In the worst case, in addition to blindness, entire parts of the face can die off, which is medically referred to as tissue necrosis.

Risk wrinkle injection

“Such serious Complications are rare, but when the number of injections increases – which is definitely the case – the number of complications also increases,” reports Dr. Said Hilton, who recently reported on this as a Galderma speaker at the FOBI in Munich.

The main problem is that many practitioners do not know facial anatomy well enough. Equally important is knowledge of the High-risk regions Facial. These include:

  • the nose
  • the temple (temporal region)
  • the frown line (glabellar region)

Until now, the only way to react to the complications is to Antidote Hyaluronidase to be used. This agent, in turn, may only be used by physicians. “But even hyaluronidase does not guarantee absolutely certain success in the event of serious complications,” reports plastic surgeon Dr. Ludger Meyer, who recently acted as a savior in an emergency in a case from Leipzig. A 23-year-old female patient was in danger of going blind after a filler injection. Fortunately, this was averted.

Conclusion: So absolutely to inject only to the specialist designated for it! And: at least as important the choice of a quality filler!
